So, Z has asked us to start a poll to see if there is enough demand to build an iron farm in spawn. Granted, they're not the prettiest things, if we build if off in one of the furthest spawn chunks, and give it a nice exterior, I think it would be beneficial to the server as a whole.

I will be fronting most the time and resources to build this, although help and donations are welcome. If this is approved, we'll need to decide on which blocks to use (keeping in mind that half slabs aren't available on the new blocks yet).

The one we'd build would be the Iron Titan, found at , the 32 village version will suit us fine, with the option to upgrade later... 1300 iron an hour should be more than enough!

Since this would be "free iron for all", I would like to suggest that if you take any iron, you help out by making stacks of ingot into iron blocks to help save chest space. I'll even give you a nice poppy for your effort

The titan sounds like an amazing build to do, ive built the trench and foundry so I love this idea

I still think that the iron towers is a better build idea. The iron towers rebuilds itself if broken while the iron titan will not and will take a long time to fix if the farm is broken. I would rather build it than the titan just for comfort in case the spawn chunks despawn

The titan wont break as long as it is within the spawn chunks

well just make sure to have a nether portal redstone device on it so the spawn chunks dont unload
EDIT: for those of you who do not know entity processing stops a minute after the last player enters the nether which means that the iron farm would break without something being thrown in the portals

That's the thing though, the spawn chunks stay permanently fully loaded.

Regardless, spawn chunks are treated just as if a player were in the area. Entities continue to be processed even if no player is present.

heres how I have proof on my behalf

    http://minecraft.gamepedia.com/Spawn_chunk

    Spawn chunks and other dimensions
All Overworld chunks (including the spawn chunks) are unloaded 60 seconds after the last player in the Overworld enters another dimension (the Nether or the End). This means that spawn chunks stop working if the player spends a lot of time away from the Overworld. However, if an item is tossed into a nether portal from the Overworld, this 60 second timer is reset, and the spawn chunks remain loaded and active.

One method of keeping spawn chunks loaded, even when all players are in other dimensions, is to create a redstone mechanism in a spawn chunk that causes a dispenser to throw an item into a nether portal every 45 seconds.[3] Since the 60 second threshold is never reached, the spawn chunks are never unloaded

EDIT: it takes me 5 or more min to run from my nether portal to spawn and if im the only player online i would unload the spawn chunks

Like I said in game. The towers are too redstone heavy. We're trying to keep server resources as low as possible, remember?

    I stand corrected. Apologies

there is still problems with that see the iron titan requires a nether portal device even within the spawn chunks or it has the possibility unloading. The problem with that is we are most likely using a separate nether portal than spawn which has high possibility of portal conflict

no portal conflict if done far enough away and linked properly

    Damnit.

Yes we need iron farms. No, we don't need an ugly ass iron farm taking up our precious spawn. I added an option to build them ELSEWHERE on the map.

Why not just either sink it into the ground and/or make it underground if you're so concerned about looks?

underground is a lot more difficult

Hate to be that guy, *merry.

Also, do you guys really want an iron farm that's gross enough to give the impression that it's actual job is farming manure?
