The persistent nether is rarely used for its original purpose - building fast paths and travel hubs. Instead it is treated like a mining world that doesn't allow griefing. There's no point to keeping it around any longer, it only adds confusion when talking about "the nether", which could be one of two worlds.

If the nether is removed, what happens to the hundreds of portals that exist?

Secondarily - what about all the people who treat towny as a mining world? I was just commenting to someone yesterday about how many branch mines I find, created even within the last week.

The portals would either go nowhere or go to the nether mining world (portals from nether mining leading to normal mining)

"Mining world" is a legacy name that has just stuck, it is a resource world. You are free to mine and whatever in the overworld as long as you don't destroy tons of land for resource collection.
So... The people who mine in the overworld will be left alone.
The people who treat the overworld as mining will get the surface damage reverted and will be warned.

    -edit-
Terraforming for your base is fine as long as it isn't an eyesore because eyesore rules.

I like the idea of the 'Towny World' Nether Portals taking you to the Resource World's Nether, I think due to the 'Towny World's Nether' not being used for it's original purpose, it's basically an unused world and should be removed.

I've said we could do that with the portals, but here's why I'm hesitant to actually do that: It leads to confusion when players can go to the nether, but need to warp to get home, and it prevents the possibility of charging money for mining world access. Charging for access is probably very unpopular and I'm pretty sure won't happen.

I wish we had sort of a "nether hub" like a few rooms that held all of the portals going which way or the other. But, I'm assuming that wouldn't be possible to do because some portals would have to be a long way from other portals, right? I'm not very read up on how portals work for transportation in the over world. I've just seen it done on other servers. And I feel like this thread is a bit my fault since the other day I didn't know if we were able to mine in the regular nether :b And I'm sorry about that, but I don't use the nether very much, except to get stuff for quests, which I go to the mining nether for, so I will leave it up to people who use the regular Nether more than I on whether or not we should keep it.

How it works is the nether coordinates match up to 1/8 of the overworld coordinates; so if you travel in the nether, it allows for 8x as fast movement.
Edit: Given we do have homes and town spawns, this is kind of redundant.

And in answer to Erik: I'd like to see the current nether stay, as there are a couple of things I use it for - primarily a flattened and expanded fortress that gets better spawns for withers. However, if it were removed, I'm with Harry in that it'd be useful for pve/pvp to match up to mining nether.

So here's the problem: Either the arena spawns wither skeletons at such a rate that I can't balance them with normal play or the difference is not that much and there's no point to making a persistent arena.

I've found that the arena does significantly increase rates, but not to the point where it's unbalanced - though it may just be that I'm not good at wither hunting in an unmodified fortress.

    "Significant, but not unbalanced"
That's... not how "significant" works under any definition.

If it's significantly faster, other players would need a similar setup to compete. It is not reasonable to expect every player gets access to their own flattened nether fortress for killing mobs.
"We don't have that many players" and/or "Not everyone needs one, they can be shared"
Those arguments fall apart with more players.

Beyond that, why should we keep an entire world around when all it's used for is farming mobs?

I believe this action just needs to be done, the disregard of the Towny Nether that is. And, for the minutia of why the Towny Nether should be kept, to be understood as not being suitable when it comes to an expanding/larger server population just because there's one 'mob farm' area built within that particular Nether.

I don't want to seem daft, but what is the towny nether?

Thing is, wither skulls are an endgame item that take a while to retrieve, and by putting in a large amount of effort, you can noticeably improve the rates. When I say "significant but not unbalanced", I mean that the rates a noticeably improved, but not to the point where it's ridiculously overpowered - a player without one (if they have good gear) can still collect wither skulls, they just have to spend a bit more time.

And to say that anything that noticeably improves rates is unbalanced seems a bit off. By that logic, no one should have efficiency fortune tools to mine diamonds. The difference being that a wither setup is far harder to do, and gives less reward than fortune/looting.

However, I can see the issue you might hold with a world that solely exists because players want better rates on mobs. So when it does get removed, I'd ask that you please let us know in advance so that I can remove my various redstone devices.

    Uh....
Everyone can get a pick with efficiency. Maybe 40 people can get their own nether fortress. If only 40 people could ever get access to the efficiency enchant, I would do something about that.

I'm just curious what redstone devices you have? I can't remember who but someone said you had something that helps with mcmmo skills and that brings me to my next question. Are things that specifically help you gain Mcmmo skills at a faster rate than just gaining them from doing the normal things like mining, farming, etc. allowed?

Obvious case: afk to get free levels/money is not okay. Otherwise gray area settled on case by case basis.

I've got a cube maker for converting ores in there. Not a huge amount of redstone, but I'd like the pistons back.

And I'm just presuming you read Erik's reply on mcmmo grinding.

Be sure gather up the items before Erik finally decides to get rid of it, as the Towny Nether is still currently accessible.

I had a nether minecart line from madozia and siliconia to the mesa, and I anted to improve it and connet with Notchia. Will that be possible? What about my thousands of rail tracks in the neteher?
