I completely forgot about minecon when I made the announcement. It turns out Mojang had their own 2018 surprise: The Update Aquatic! Well now we have a number of options in terms of when we make the new map, and I need your input to help decide. I'll put some generic pro's and con's below, but if you have any additional input (beyond voting) feel free to post!

ASAP/Whatever version is available at the time
With this option, we'll plan to have the new map ready to go on January 1st. If everything is ready beforehand, we may move that date up to better fit with winter breaks.

    Pros:
    • The time that we change maps would be public knowledge
    • We won't end up sitting on changes for an unknown amount of time before applying them
    Cons:
    • This requires the most updating: first the map, then 2 minecraft versions
    • Bugs are almost guaranteed when updating a world through 1.14

    1.13 Technical update
The biggest change (so far) for this version is the removal of id/data pairs for blocks, instead using a string name. This means blocks like stone, andesite, and granite all have unique names rather than being 1:0, 1:3, 1:1. This also means potential bugs with updating worlds, and definitely some broken plugins.

    Pros:
    • The world can be prepared for any breaking changes in this update
    • We get access to a few more tools and blocks for last-minute style changes
    Cons:
    • Dealing with broken plugins and a new map at the same time
    • We don't know what new breaking changes will be made before its release

    1.14 Aquatic update
If you haven't seen anything about this update and you want to, google is your friend. Otherwise I'll try to avoid spoilers as much as possible. This update affects world gen, which may lead to inconsistent terrain if part of the map is explored in earlier versions before this update occurs.

    Pros:
    • Mojang tends to spread out big terrain updates - We'd likely not need another terrain update for some time
    • The world would have no issues with mismatched terrain
    • We'd get plenty of time to use the 1.13 tools to improve spawn, and some time to use 1.14 blocks and mechanics
    Cons:
    • The public plan for this version is SPRING 2018. That is at least 4 months later than we initially planned
    • I've put a second bullet point because ^ that is rough. We wanted a 2018 map, and waiting a quarter of the year to update... Ouch.

Though it is a very small sampling, the good news is that it looks like right now we seem to be leaning into the "wait a bit" mode. It would be mildly humorous if you could generate a smallish world, circular, with ocean border on all sides for the people who need to START OVER RIGHT NOW, then expand the world border for a secondary zone with 1.13, then expand it into the full world with 1.14

This would also make the world look a bit like a bullseye. Tee hee.

That'd destroy the point of waiting for a coherent map, goof

Bumping because only 9 votes is quite sad.

I have a proposition, with the new map depending on peoples thoughts would it be possible to design a custom map? I used to use worldpainter and worldmachine professionally when i did some work for a build team and had to use my own resources for trees and organics. I believe something totally new like a finite world that is custom made and has custom biomes, structures, trees and everything would be an awesome change. (Lets hope this idea isnt as bad as the movie script, ez.)

The only problem i can see from this is possibly performance issues of the game if the map has too much detailings, and one thing which would disappear would be cave systems. This could have a workaround, but in all honesty with proper coordination things that are missing like villages and other structures could be worked around with communication between the people making the map and staff members.

This is ONLY a proposition, and i would love to have a chat about it, and possibly hear feedback.

    Regards
    Tim.

N.B: The image attached is only an example of maps that can be generated from these tools, and mountain height and terrain factors can be controlled.

EDIT: Upon reading up on the aquatic updates and such, i believe that the new map even with the new updates can be modified, and biomes can simply be updated to spawn creatures, existing structures would stay, and anything playerbuilt can stay, structures like shipwrecks and others can be added through worldpainter as well. So a terrain overhaul wouldnt be too painful. That being said all of the chest locks and such would be lost, i recommend maybe porting to the new map after 1.14, which allows map development time, and for plugins to be prepared before a new map is added.

This was one idea quietly discussed, and I believe SOME generic editing is being attempted for the next-go-round. The little samplings I've seen were really nice without being ridiculous - but I would love to hear ez's thoughts as well!

Sorry to put you on the spot, boss!

Are you volunteering? Because that's 4 billion blocks without counting depth :x

Well i would be happy to start designing a map, presuming you are restricting the border, a 32k by 32k map is very do-able. It perhaps is much more suited to a custom map, allowing me to do custom biomes. I want to consult with you though about biomes and their resources. Like has been mentioned for 2018, i have a holiday coming up next week, and i will have 8 weeks in which to work on the map.

I am also going to have to get all the assets like trees and structures i have all in place, and really i think that community wise, you could set up submissions for structures that they would like to see, eg. Ruins etc.

And suddenly this thread lost its meaning, thanks Mojang.

The original plan for 1.13 and 1.14 have been scrapped. Instead of releasing 1.13 with technical changes in early 2018 and 1.14 in mid 2018, they're merging 1.13 into 1.14, which will be the new 1.13.

Too confusing? As of now, 1.13 will have all the technical changes and all the aquatic changes and is planned to be released in mid 2018 which totally won't also be delayed. :I

I may make a new thread on this topic, but this thread will now be locked.
